Background of the Study
Women’s empowerment is widely recognized as a crucial driver for improved maternal and child health outcomes. In Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State, initiatives aimed at empowering women through education, economic opportunities, and social support have demonstrated promising benefits for family health (Adewale, 2023). Empowered women are more likely to make informed healthcare decisions, seek quality medical services, and advocate for their rights. This study examines the influence of women’s empowerment on maternal and child health outcomes, considering how increased autonomy and participation in decision-making can lead to reduced maternal mortality and improved child nutrition (Olatunji, 2024). It further investigates the interplay between empowerment and access to healthcare services, with a view to identifying the barriers and enablers of positive health outcomes (Okoro, 2025). The findings are expected to contribute to policy development that supports gender equity and sustainable improvements in health.
Statement of the Problem
In Owo, despite significant efforts toward women’s empowerment, challenges persist in translating these gains into improved maternal and child health outcomes. Structural barriers such as limited access to education, economic constraints, and entrenched cultural practices continue to impede progress (Akinola, 2023). The disconnect between empowerment initiatives and tangible health benefits necessitates a thorough evaluation of existing strategies. This study seeks to identify the challenges that hinder the positive impact of women’s empowerment on health outcomes, thereby informing more effective interventions (Ogun, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the level of women’s empowerment in Owo.
To evaluate the impact of empowerment on maternal and child health outcomes.
To recommend interventions to strengthen the link between empowerment and health improvements.
Research Questions:
How does women's empowerment affect maternal and child health in Owo?
What are the key factors mediating the relationship between empowerment and health outcomes?
What strategies can enhance the positive impact of empowerment on health?
Research Hypotheses:
Increased women's empowerment is associated with improved maternal health outcomes.
Empowerment positively influences child health indicators.
Socio-economic and cultural factors mediate the relationship between empowerment and health outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it underscores the transformative potential of women’s empowerment on maternal and child health. The findings will guide policymakers and practitioners in designing interventions that leverage empowerment to achieve better health outcomes, ultimately fostering more inclusive and sustainable community development (Nwankwo, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
